Chilli Pepper Anaheim Seeds

Chilli Pepper Anaheim Seeds

Anaheim chilliĀ peppers are large meaty pods that are mild in heat but sweet in flavour with large conical shaped fruits that reach between 15-20cm long by 3cm wide. They mature from dark green to a glossy dark red and have a shiny smooth skin.

Chilli Pepper Anaheim is a Capsicum annuum which is a species of the plant genus Capsicum native to southern North America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. This species is the most common and extensively cultivated of the five domesticated capsicums. The species encompasses a wide variety of shapes and sizes of peppers, both mild and hot, such as bell peppers, jalapeños, and cayenne peppers. Capsicum annuum is an evergreen Perennial growing to 1m by 1m at a medium rate. It is hardy to UK zone 9 and is frost tender. It is in leaf all year, in flower from July to September, and the seeds ripen from August to October. The species is hermaphrodite (which has both male and female organs).

Anaheim fruits are generally used at the green stage when they are very mild and are the key ingredient for 'chilli verde' & 'chilli rellinos'. Anaheims can also be used when red and are generally slightly hotter. This semi-hot pepper has a rating of between 500-2,500 Scoville Heat Units.

The pods have thick walls and a large cavity inside so are great for stuffing, roasting and frying. They can also be frozen whilst fresh or dried so are great to keep & store for use later in the year. The plant is quite gangly and fairly tall reaching between 60-80cm and as it can be laden with a number of heavy peppers the pot may require weighting down to prevent it toppling over. An ideal chilli for those who just want a little chilli heat!
